The President's Debt Ceiling Speech and the Reply

So, Boehner is lying, manipulating, scum. Just wanted to get that off of my chest.

Here are some things that Boehner said that so thoroughly pissed me off:

First, he said that the House passed the cut, cap, and balance bill with bipartisan support - yeah if you count FIVE democrats voting for it and NINE republicans voting against it as bipartisan. Every other Democrat voted against it and every other Republican voted for it! It should have been developed in a bipartisan way and then a lot more representatives might have voted for it (in a REAL bipartisan way).

Next, he said that he has being trying to work with President Obama since January on"something that will boost confidence in our economy, renew a measure of faith in our government, and help small businesses get back on track." Well, I'm pretty sure if you had really tried then we wouldn't be sitting here at the last moment with the House Republicans taking America's credit rating hostage! How much confidence and faith do you think you have restored by deciding to play politics with our financial future at the last minute Mr. Boehner? You have waited until this moment so you could use this as leverage and not have to give up anything!  That's what happens when you invent a crisis - you get to force others to avoid the crisis so that you get what you want.

Of the cut, cap, balance plan, he said: "It CUTS and CAPS government spending and paves the way for a Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution, which we believe is the best way to stop Washington from spending money it doesn't have. Before we even passed the bill in the House, the President said he would veto it." I guess you forgot to talk to the SENATE because they sure as shit didn't pass it! Maybe, if the House had developed the legislation in a bipartisan way, the president would have signed it - just like he was willing to do with a grand deal or the gang of six plan! The President established the Bowles-Simpson commission to solve our debt program in 2010, before the tea partiers even got to congress!

Next he said: "The president has often said we need a 'balanced' approach -- which in Washington means: we spend more, you pay more." This is political maneuvering, not to mention flat out lying! Let me say this again: THE PRESIDENT HAS AGREED TO MAKE DRASTIC CUTS, but to make it a balanced plan he has requested REVENUE INCREASES!That's what it means when the President says a "balanced approach."

His next piece of wisdom: "You see, there is no stalemate in Congress." BULLSHIT, Boehner obviously needs to go back to 9th grade government class and learn that there are TWO houses of congress - the House and the Senate! The Senate isn't passing anything that the House is sending because it is too radical. The House is the mob rule body, and the Senate is the deliberative and compromising body. There IS a stalemate in congress.

And finally he said: "If the President signs it, the 'crisis' atmosphere he has created will simply disappear." Huh? What is this you say? Why do I feel like a vein is about to burst in my forehead? Before the Republicans got a hold on the nations credit card in 2001 we were on track to pay off our debt by this year! We would have been able to use even more government spending to stimulate the economy and still be relatively safe! Also, I do not believe that the President is the one who turned a regular process into a hostage situation. I also do not believe the President is one of the Representatives who have declared that they will not vote to raise the debt ceiling under any circumstances.

Attention all readers, please conduct a BLOG-RANT of your own! It is high time that Democrats become the party of intolerance toward these kinds of lies. The Republicans protect their buddies in big business, its time that we stand up for each other!

Debt Ceiling Fallout

Right now our elected officials are all sitting in a room trying to hash out an economic plan to save the country. The only problem is we’re dealing with Democrats who are unwilling to stand up for their beliefs (and those of their constituents) and Republicans who have lost all basis in reality.

Obama put forth a $4 trillion dollar deficit reduction plan over ten years that would not only cut the deficit but would increase revenue through raised taxes. Rep. Boehner simply walked out of the talks. He didn’t believe the plan would get support so he gave up rather than even continue the conversation. He, like many other Republicans, would rather see Americans suffer than allow people to think he might be reasonable.

I wonder if anyone has stopped for a moment and taken away the political aspect and considered how the American people would be affected by this…

If a deal is not reached and the U.S. government goes into default millions of people in this country who are dependent upon government support for survival who would be without an income. They would have no way to pay rent or buy groceries. They wouldn’t get their medicine or be able to pay the electric bill. Does any of this even matter to Boehner and the NO MORE TAXES EVER Republicans?

Politicians keep pushing compromise to the brink and they seem to keep forgetting it’s the American people who will suffer the most. They still haven’t learned the biggest lesson from this economic recession: If you want something you have to pay for it. Income cannot exceed outcome. The House majority doesn’t want to increase revenue by raising taxes, nor do they want to cut necessary expenditures. They would rather let billionaires have another yacht than allow a woman low cost medical care. They would rather let Eric Cantor (R) cash in on his dividends than protect the poor and middle class of this country…

The Never Ending Problem of Immigration

Conversations that I've had in conjunction with information from the news networks have led me to the conclusion that politicians do not want to solve our country's immigration problem. I believe this because I watch them appear to tackle the issue without ever solving it. I also believe the immigration problem can be easily solved.

A point I want to point out in regards to immigration is that it stirs up a pot of emotion in most Americans. People view undocumented people as job thieves, squatters, and non tax paying residents. Naturally, politicians want to keep Americans focused on this issue. They know their stance on immigration can give them victory or defeat in an election. It is in their best interest to keep the pot boiling.

The immigration battle, a battle that has been going on more than three decades, can easily be solved by making undocumented people full citizens. This will allow them to participate in our society without fear of deportation. This will allow them to pay taxes just like the rest of us (well some of us), and this will even the playing field. With full citizenship, undocumented people can find better jobs, access education and branch out from construction, lawn care  and restaurant jobs. With full citizenship, undocumented people will more readily learn English. They will be able to compete and reinforce the ideals of capitalism.

You may ask, why go this route? It's the morally right thing to do. Why are undocumented people, specifically Latinos, less worthy of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? Why do we have the mentality that they are unworthy to bear the title "American?"

Once they become full citizens, politicians will have to find something new to focus on. A good thing to focus on is the moral character of the people leading our nation.

Shut Your Face Award of the Week

The Shut Your Face Award Goes To...

"They have set fires because they want to signal others, they have set fires to keep warm, and they have set fires in order to divert law enforcement agents and agencies from them."

I know that's a hanging quotation, normally I don't do that, but in this case... I must. John McCain once again makes a strong accusation and follows suit with other republicans fishing for American's emotional strings. What's more powerful than the image of America burning? I doubt any image could invoke stronger emotions than the image of America burning.
America wake up and start thinking! Mexicans are not responsible for the wildfires in Arizona and New Mexico. They are not trying to divert law enforcement agents, they have not started fires to keep warm, and they are not signaling other undocumented people.

The absurdity of this incident is comparable with the absurdity of Pat Robertson or Robinson (I can't remember his name... the one on the 700 club) blaming Katrina on homosexuals. The absurdity of McCain's statement is the absurdity of Herr Hitler and his party blaming Jews for recession in Germany. The absurdity of McCain's statement is the absurdity of blaming the Spanish for the Influenza pandemic of 1918.

Thankfully, experts have stated that the fire began at a campsite after an uncontained campfire got out of hand. If that were not the case, it could have started from a lightning strike, or from a ciggy butt that some fool (like me) threw out a car window.

McCain's accusations do nothing but bolster the recreation of Jim Crow in this country. He's trying to separate a race of people from the "real Americans." John McCain, for this reason I give you my Shut Your Face Award! Good job! Don't keep up the good work!
Shut Your Face....

Shut Your Face Award of the Week

The SYF award goes to...

Michelle Bachmann is up for party nomination. After hearing her speak earlier, I conclude that she is a good contender for nomination. Not only does she have the ability to inspire passion in others; but also, she has passion.

While stating similarities between the passions of Tea Party members and Obama's "Change" platform, she claims that the vita nova is made up of former democrats and independents. I can't see this. While even I would hop my own political traditions if my conscience came under fire, I cannot believe that so many democrats are disenchanted with the party. In lieu of my personal knowledge of Tea Party members who have never had anything to do with the Democratic Party, I call her bluff.

M. Bachmann, despite your passionate rhetoric, you live in a dream world. Although I cannot give you a Shut Your Face award at this time, I look forward to doing so in the future. After today, I know you have the ability to earn one.

Shut your face, CP McAbee

Protesting for Pride

We all know that this month is Pride Month. And with celebrating and embracing all that we are, in supporting our friends and our family, in fighting against ignorance and hatred, we must remember that we cannot simply show up for a Pride Parade once a year and then try to assimilate into the heterosexual culture. We have to be smart. Not only in who we vote for, but also in where we shop. Target, for example, we can all enjoy that place, can’t we? Decent clothes, music, D.V.D.s, books, magazines and even video games, all in one place. Better selection then K-Mart without the corporate evils of Walmart, right?
Well, almost. Actually, they contributed money, $150,000, to MN Forward (Minnesota Forward is a political action group that is funded by local corporations. Its mission statement says that, "MN Forward is an effort by Minnesota job providers to elect a governor and state legislators who understand the importance of creating private-sector jobs and economic opportunity in our state."). MN Forward then used the money to run television ads* for Minnesota gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer, who, along with being well known for his anti - gay beliefs, has also himself contributed $250 to a Christian rock band that has been known to speak harshly of gays (The band’s name is: Junkyard Prophet). He said on his campaign website, “As a legislator, I have consistently supported the constitutional marriage amendment that protects traditional marriage.”
Target is quoted as saying, “Our support of causes and candidates is based strictly on issues that affect our retail and business objectives.”
Still, Target is not alone. There’s also Best Buy, which seems like a good place for C.D.s, D.V.D.s and all your electronic or entertainment needs, right? Only if you like to entertain the idea that they spent $100,000 supporting Tom Emmer and MN Forward. So, what Target and Best Buy are telling you, the LGBTQIAP community is that, “We like you and all, but, uh, our profit margin is more important then you.”
Is that the place you want to spend your money? My high school Economics teacher (or maybe it was my Accounting teacher, I’m unsure) once said,

“You vote with your money.”
Of course, you might be asking, “But Alexander, where do I go to get the stuff I normally buy at those stores (Target and Best Buy)?”
I am still up to my eyeballs in researching these companies and corporations, but if you are going to ‘vote with your money,’ I would say places like K-Mart, Radioshack, FYE and Hot Topic would be good places to go. Are they the easiest and the cheapest choices to make? Maybe not. Are they principled? Yes. Would shopping at these locations instead of Target or Best Buy show respect for yourself, your friends, your families and your peers? Absolutely! So! Do the entire LGBTQIAP community, and yourself, a favor, and if you are going to shop, shop responsibly this Pride month, and every day, month and year that follows.

And as kind of an after thought. Don’t shop in silence. Feel free to talk to your friends, family, neighbors and co - workers. If we are going to protests these people for the homophobic and close minded decisions they have made, we must do it on a grand scale.

* MN Forward actually donated 97% of its $1.9 million in contributions toward supporting Emmer.

With Great Hope,

- J. Alexander Fisher

Queer In Dixie

We have our month thanks to President Obama, yet I can't feel the warm rays of GLBT Pride month down here in Dixie. Outside the city lights gay pride is hard to come by, and it's even harder to express. I'll tell you what I see. I see a sidewalk where I would never hold my lover's hand in fear of being bashed. I see myself being denied equality through marriage and sharing my partners work benefits. I see a local court case involving a lesbian being forced into "homo rehab" by my local Sheriff Department. I also see myself paying taxes and remaining law abiding in a country that does not recognize me as an equal to heterosexuals.

Yes, President Obama is our champion thus far. His administration has done more for the GLBT community than any other administration. However, how much is enough? People are either free or they are not. It's very clear. Equality can not be splintered to suit the needs of politics. While I am thrilled and hopeful that this is one step closer to being a "full American" (despite the fact that I was born here and I have paid taxes since age 16), I am fearful that this is an appeasement tactic.
Regardless of my personal fears, I will stand behind President Obama because, like i said,  he has done more for the GLBT cause than any other President.

LGBT Pride Month

President Bill Clinton declared the first Gay and Lesbian Pride Month in June 2000. While he failed to recognize the remainder (B&T) of the community, this seemed to be a step in the right direction. Unfortunately, once Bush took office he refused to recognize Pride Month and eight years passed without national recognition.

During Barack Obama’s campaign he said that he would help the LGBT community gain equality, and every year during his administration he has declared June to be LGBT Pride Month. Every year they have made another advancement like ending DADT or stopping the federal defense of DOMA. On May 1st, 2011, in a proclamation detailing steps his administration has taken to help bring about equality, Barack Obama proclaimed June 2011 to be LGBT Pride Month; the third of his administration.

I take this declaration to mean that Obama does intend to carry out his promises to the LGBT Community. I believe that he is devoted to full equality. I also believe that every civil rights movement takes time.

While there are many who would argue that Obama hasn’t done enough, I believe he is taking steps in the right direction. As a straight ally any changes put in place by the Obama administration may not effect me directly, however I can see how these new policies are changing the lives of my friends and loved ones. I can also see that these slow changes are better than a complete halt of progress. If Obama wins a second term he’ll be able to champion more LGBT causes leading the way for full equality. Leading the way for full civil rights.

Realistically, changes in LGBT policy don’t affect me much. I’m less likely to be discriminated against as a cisgender heterosexual female. I’m unlikely to encounter someone trying to legislate whom I can or cannot fall in love with or marry. But I can be outraged on behalf of my friends. I can be angry that they’re refused service at restaurants because someone saw two same sex adults holding hands. I can be angry that I could pick up some strange man I’ve never met from a bus stop and apply for a marriage license anywhere and have a marriage that will be recognized in all 50 states; but, two men who’ve known and loved each other for years have to go through a waiting period and drive halfway across the country to get married and have a document that isn’t even honored in their home state. (I can also be angry that I could be forced to carry a child to term that I don’t want while they can’t even adopt a child that needs a home and a family, but that’s another blog.)

An Obama victory in 2012 could mean great leaps toward equality, while having any Republican in the White House would mean progress grinding to a halt. It would mean at least four more years of waiting for something that’s long overdue. If for some reason you don’t believe me, look at Bush’s record on LGBT issues and consider that his views are pretty much standard for the Republican Party. http://www.ontheissues.org/george_w__bush.htm

I’m proud of Barack Obama and his administration, I’m proud that they’re taken a stand for LGBT equality. I’m also hopeful for what a 2012 Obama victory could mean not only for the LGBT community, but for all Americans.

Shut Your Face Award of the Week Part 2

Nothing is sadder than watching a beautiful blond woman peddle her book on national TV. You might say, "but people do it all the time." Yes, they do, but this one is different. This book peddler is controversial, syndicated, and hated by many. On the other hand, many people worship her and become entranced at the sight of her slim lined body.
Ann Coulter, when I looked crazy up in my dictionary I saw a your pic. Down here we say, "Bless her heart." But I'm going to make an exception for you. I'll come right out and say... You're Crazy. Watching you on your latest CNN interview reminded me of a three legged race for the blind. The further you go on your diatribes the less you make sense, honey. Finally, I'm forced to pause and ask... what is she talking about? I suggest making a list prior to interviews and sticking with it.
Although I believe Ann deserves a "SHUT THE F UP AWARD," I can't find it in myself to go that far. The "F" word is ugly. To my favorite American Neo Nazi, Ann Coulter, I gladly give the "Shut Your Face Award."

Shut Your Face Award of the Week

... and the SHUT YOUR FACE AWARD goes to....

Congressman... "I" before "E" except after "C" and in Weiner,

Sometimes we say too much, and we get tangled in our own trap. Sometimes it's better to just shut your face or use your brain. You should have said something like..." Yes,I did it and I have a problem." Everyone would have run to help you. But, OH NO! You can't do that. You would rather lie. LIAR LIAR PANTS ON FIRE....

Congressman Weiner, I gladly give you a Shut Your Face Award.

Bipartisanship and the 2011 State of the Union Address

The question now is "Does sitting with people 'across the aisle' or of different beliefs then you, create bipartisanship." And just like debating about guns and clips distracts us from the fact that people were shot, and some died, so this distracts us.

If Congress can convince us that they are creating bipartisanship by sitting together at the State of the Union, then we have a very short memory. If we believe this will create bipartisanship then we have already forgotten the vote to repeal health care, a vote that was rather partisan. Not only did it pass the House, which has a Republican majority, by almost complete party lines, but it was introduced in a House that knew it would not get signed by the President. It does appear that republicans are locking down government by trying to pass this repeal so that they can blame it on President Obama in 2012. So what is Mr. Obama's defense to this now locked down government?

To ask people to sit together at the State of the Union, to create a bipartisanship that isn't there. Harry Reid is not going to slap John Boehner on the back and say, "Gotcha!" And have repeal in committee Wednesday morning. John Boehner is not going to apologize for locking up and shutting down the government. There is only one semblance of what the general public considers bipartisanship and this is in President Obama's further move to the center.

The ultimate thing professional politicians want us to believe is that their word 'bipartisanship' is the same thing as the compromise the Founding Fathers had, and it is not. The Founding Fathers did not move to the center more and more the closer it got to election time, the Founding Fathers stood staunch in their beliefs, and the compromise came out in the law. Now we have spineless snakes who want to lie and steal, who want to cheat each other and cut each other down.

So is this State of the Union 'Buddy - Up' system a sign of bipartisanship? Unlikely. More likely it's a great attempt at blinding and pacifying us to the reality of the world around us.

Regarding Healthcare Repeal

Dear Editor,

On January 1, 2011, several new things came into effect because of the new health care law passed under President Obama and the 111th U.S. Congress. Here are a few of those things: “Insurers (not employers) will be required to spend 85% of large - group and 80% of small group and individual plan premiums (with certain adjustments) on health care or to improve health care quality, or return the difference to the customer as a rebate.” This is to suggest that before the CEO’s of health insurance companies go lining their pockets, all making over a million dollars, that they spend 85% of the money people pay in as premiums, on the health care of the people who pay the premiums. Is it an evil idea to the majority of the House? That people get what they paid for in premiums?

What some may try to suggest is we are only targeting the spending of the health insurers, but that doesn’t explain why on January 1, 2011 this all came into effect: “Flexible spending accounts, health care reimbursement arrangements and health savings accounts cannot be used to pay for over the counter drugs, purchased without a prescription, except for insulin.” There it is. Citizens! Stop trying to get your insurer to pay for drugs you must not need. And you must not need it or your doctor would have prescribed it to you.

If these are not good things, and if people are still not convinced that this repeal is a bad idea, then look to the Congressional Budget Office. The CBO says that repealing this health care law would INCREASE, are you listening fiscal conservatives, INCREASE the deficit by $230 million dollars. Do we want to increase the deficit? I thought the idea was to decrease the deficit? Or is it more important to defeat President Obama and make him look bad than it is to make this a more fiscally responsible country? Are we becoming that shallow? This law that the House majority wants to repeal tells insurance companies to spend people’s money on the people, is that bad? Health insurers were supposed to help people save and invest their money for the INSURANCE OF THEIR HEALTH!!! Not to line their own pockets.

So do we repeal this law for the sake of opposing our sitting president? Or do we call our representatives and our senators and tell them we don’t want them voting to perpetuate the deficit in the name of party politics? The decision is yours.

- J. Alexander Fisher
